Polar vortex reaches Patagonia and freezes waves in the sea
The extreme cold that is hitting Patagonia has frozen sea waves north of the city of Río Grande, near San Sebastián Bay, in the province of Tierra del Fuego, southern Argentina. The phenomenon was recorded on Tuesday, 25, about 362 kilometers from Ushuaia, the capital of the province.
The images went viral on social media. Meteorologists told the Argentine newspaper Clarín that the main cause of this phenomenon is a combination of extremely low temperatures and specific weather conditions that favor the formation of ice in the sea.
Tierra del Fuego is experiencing temperatures below zero that, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), will continue throughout the week. According to Clarín, the region had temperatures below -10ºC last weekend – on Tuesday, the temperature in Río Grande ranged from -0.5°C to 0.7°C, while the thermal sensation reached a minimum of -4.8°C.
On Thursday and Friday, the maximum will be -1ºC and the minimum will be -6ºC. The hottest day in the next seven days will be Sunday, which is forecasted to have a maximum of 3ºC and a minimum of -1ºC.
